Setting up your system

Be sure to check that the following settings and preferences are set in Internet Explorer.

Pop-up blocker settings

You must be able to see pop-up windows because the Item Editor is a pop-up window.

To allow pop-up windows in Internet Explorer:

  1. From the Tools menu, click Pop-up Blocker, and then Pop-up Blocker Settings. The Pop-up Blocker Settings dialog appears.
  2. Type the appropriate site URL in the Address of Web site to allow box. For example: session.masteringbio.com
  3. Click Add.
  4. Click Close to close the dialog and save your settings.

You may have other pop-up blockers enabled, for example through the Yahoo Toolbar or Google Toolbar. You must also disable these toolbars or allow pop-ups.

Flash Player installation

You must install the Flash player, version 9.

Test the version of your Flash player at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/. (You do not need to install Shockwave, only the Flash player.) If you do not have Flash 9, download it using the link on the same page, then test to make sure it has been installed.

Privacy settings

If you filter cookies, you must allow session cookies.

To allow session cookies:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Select the Privacy tab.
  3. Select Sites.
  4. Add the domain that you are working in, for example masteringbio.com .
  5. Select OK until the Options window closes.

Trusted Site setting

You will need to make Mastering a trusted site in Internet Explorer.

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Select the Security tab.
  3. Choose Trusted Sites.
  4. Select Sites.
  5. Deselect the box that says Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.
  6. Add the Mastering series sites to your Trusted Sites. For example, you would enter the following URLs to add MasteringBiology as a trusted site:
    • http://www.masteringbio.com
    • http://session.masteringbio.com
  7. Click OK.
  8. From the Security tab, select Custom Level.
  9. Scroll to Scripting, and set the following to Enable:
    • Active scripting
    • Allow paste operations via script
    • Scripting of Java applets
  10. Select OK until the Internet Tools box closes.
  11. Close your browser, and then open it again.

Clearing cache settings

You need to set Internet Explorer to empty your system cache each time the browser is opened.

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  2. In the Browsing History section, select Settings.
  3. Select Every visit to the page.
  4. Select OK until the Internet Tools box closes.
  5. Close your browser, and then open it again.
